English Gardening Club March 2026

Spring is finally here!  We are emerging tentatively from winter’s hibernation, delighting in the cheery yellow daffodils which have emerged alongside the purple irises, pretty crocus and the masses of blooms covering our camellias.

Although the nights are still chilly, March brings sunny days with the prospect of a fresh new gardening season stretching ahead of us.  There is a palpable excitement amongst us gardeners and we are raring to get cracking with planting, sowing seeds, visiting garden centres and plant fairs to search out new additions for our borders.

My sunny windowsill has sweet pea seedlings, snapdragons, larkspur and onion seeds, the latter a new experiment.  Apparently, if you grow onions from seed they are less likely to bolt and produce larger onions.  Let’s see!  The larkspur seeds have failed to germinate which is disappointing but maybe I will have another go and sow a fresh batch.

Now is the time to tidy up the borders, cut back dead stems, prune hydrangeas (although I leave this until later in March) and roses, clean the greenhouse, tidy up the shed and remove small weeds which are beginning to emerge.

We will be starting to venture out on garden visits this month including RHS Wisley this weekend followed by Hampton Court Palace Gardens on the 14th for their open day.  Wishing you all a fabulous garden season ahead.
